ON A PERSONAL NOTE:
I’m a fiancé, son, brother, and dog fanatic. I am obsessed with music. Here’s a short list of my favorite artists: Jimi Hendrix, Frightened Rabbit, Avett Brothers, The Zombies, Ryan Adams, Fleet Foxes, The Decemberists, Black Star, Funkadelic and about a zillion more. Also, I dig super heroes—we swear you don’t HAVE to be a geek to work for Green Dot etc.; it just helps!
In college I sat down in a gorgeous hall of the oldest building on campus and heard a presentation about how I could help a friend who experienced sexual violence. Surely these numbers must be inflated, said an 18-year-old version of myself; surely 1 in 4 was too big a number for my tranquil campus. But as I asked around, the numbers were confirmed in the starkest manner—through the stories of close friends, partners, even family members. It wasn’t some THING out in the ether, it was tragedy happening to some of the people I cared most about. I’m just one guy; what could I possibly do to make a difference?
When I search myself, I find a fundamental truth rising consistently. That no matter what I do with my life, I have to leave the world better than the way I found it. As if the world is a campsite at which I only have a short stay. The only shot I have of making it better for the next generation of young people that I have mentored and taught is by holding onto the earnest belief that the current rates of violence aren’t inevitable; that people, young and old, are itching to eradicate sexual violence, partner violence, and stalking from the face of the earth just as much as I am.
Alexander Leslie, MBA, has 10 years of experience in the prevention of power-based personal violence, both professionally and as a peer educator in college. He concentrated in Organizational Development and Leadership at Case Western Reserve University’s Weatherhead School of Management and has applied those theories to work at Green Dot etc. as well as the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center, where he developed prevention programs that reached young people. He has a BA in Religious Studies from The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA and has taken additional coursework in the management of nonprofit organizations.
